  1. I found this method of protest very odd. Let’s be vocal about our opposition to climate change by…stopping one of the busiest roads in Manchester, maybe even England as a whole, generating spikes of pollution in this one area and generally more pollution through the day as cars around you burn fuel just to stay still. Great thinking.

  2. I walked by this while it was happening. I expressed being unsure that this was the best way of protesting but my boyfriend pointed out it does raise awareness, so I guess it depends what they were going for.

  3. I watched this happen, and myself and several others commented that buses on their way to the MRI and Christie hospitals were blocked from getting through which just seems ridiculous. They blocked a bus route, where no cars are actually allowed through which seems really stupid as well!

  4. I think all they managed to do with this stunt was to cause people to hate them. Blocking one of the busiest roads in Manchester isn’t going to suddenly make everyone go “omg they are right!” They are just going to get angry and annoyed.

The busses would have caused less pollution by running them all over than by sitting there for hours with their engines idling.

  5. As much as i cannot see this type of protest causing any more awareness than “Who are these nutters blocking the road” i can’t think of another way to get the message across so all power to them. It makes them as outraged as they should be just in the wrong direction.

  6. It does my head in seeing the number of police required to deal with these protesters, police that could be better deployed elsewhere. The protesters won’t give a shit but I just think its a colossal waste of time and resources.

Wasting bus and car users time is selfish but again, I expect the protesters simply don’t care about anything other than ‘the cause’.

But lets face it they all could have stood in the road and set themselves on fire, and it will have achieved the exact same outcome (the big polluters like China simply don’t care and there is nothing we can do about that).

  7. They missed a trick there. They should have walked along the carriageway at 0.5mph. As long as they’re moving, they’re not obstructing. Pedestrians have a common law right of way along any part of the highway and so they cannot be moved out of carriageway onto the footway.

Walking very slowly significantly reduces the chances of being prosecuted for obstruction – because moving things aren’t obstructing.
